W.J. Canning
Canning was born in Co. Donegal and joined the Royal Iniskilling Fusiliers as a boy. He served in Germany, Kenya, Oman, Bahrain, Cyprus and Northern Ireland. On the amalgamation of the three remaining Irish infantry regiments in 1968, he served with the Royal Irish Rangers and was subsequently commissioned. He wrote a number of books, including at least two on World War One.
