Major-General Sir Frederick Maurice KCMG, CB, LLD
Maurice was a Sherwood Forester. He fought in the Second Boer War. At the outbreak of the war, he was posted to 3rd Division as a staff officer, and saw action at Mons. In 1915 he was posted to the War Office as Director of Military Operations for the Imperial General Staff. In 1916 he was promoted to Major-General. He worked closely with Robertson. He was finally forced to resign his commission in May 1918 after writing a letter to The Times criticizing David LLoyd George for making misleading statements about the strength of British forces in France.
