Major- General W.M.St. G. Kirke CB, CMG, DSO, psc
Kirke was born in 1877. He was commissioned into the Royal Regiment of Artillery in 1896. By the outbreak of the war, he was a major, finishing the war as a colonel. Through the war he was a General Staff Officer at GHQ in France and Belgium. He was mentioned in despatches six times. He was then Deputy Director of Military Operations between 1918 and 1922, then he had a distinguished army career finishing as Commander-in-Chief of Home Forces from 1939 to 1940, when he retired.
