Ralph May
May spent his childhood in the Royal Hospital at Chelsea, where his father was a Captain of Invalids. Educated at Ampleforth, he enlisted in November 1944 and was called up on VJ Day. He attended the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst and was commissioned into the Border Regiment in 1948, following in his father's footsteps. He served in various parts of the world; in 1957 he closed the Regimental Depot on the amalgamation of the King's Own Royal Regiment and the Border Regiment. He retired in 1964. In 1971 he set up the Regimental Museum in Carlisle Castle and was Curator until 1991.
