Lieutenant-Colonel F.M. Bailey CIE

Bailey was a Gold Medallist of the Royal Geographical Society, and a Livingstone Gold Medallist of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. He was born in Lahore in 1882 and died in Norfolk in 1967. He was commissioned onto the Unattached List of the Indian Army in 1900. He was admitted to the Indian Army a year later and was attached to the 17th Bengal Lancers. In 1906 he transferred to the Foreign and Political Department and then began his career as one of the last protagonists of "The Great Game". In the war, he served on the Western Front in 1915 with the 34th Sikh Pioneers. He was shot in the arm and returned to England. Later he served at Gallipoli. Then he was sent back to India. In December 1917 he was sent to South Persia where he served as Political Officer. Then in 1918 until 1920 he served in Chinese and Russian Turkestan. His best known adventure is his mission to Tashkent in 1918, vividly described in his book "Mission to Tashkent" (in The Collection).
