John Brophy

Brophy was born in Liverpool. He died in 1965. In 1914 he lied about his age and joined the Army. He served in the infantry for 4 years and was honourably discharged before his 19th birthday. He then went to Liverpool University on a Government grant and later to Durham University for a year to study psychoanalysis. He was a teacher in Cairo for 2 years but returned to the UK on account of ill health. He wrote about 40 books and was described as "one of the most provocative and distinguished of our younger novelists and essayists"
