Sir Henry Souttar FRICS

Souttar was just simple H.S. Souttar when he wrote his book on the Belgian Field Hospital in 1915. He trained as a mathematician and engineer. His engineering experience led him to design and make new types of surgical instruments. His mathematical experience led him to become a leader in Radiotherapy. In 1925 he pioneered "blind" open heart surgery on a patient with congenital heart defect, this was not attempted again until 1948.
