Lieutenant-Colonel The Hon. Ralph G.A. Hamilton
Hamilton was born in 1883 and was commissioned into the Grenadier Guards in 1901, serving with the 1st Battalion at Aldershot. But in August 1903 he transferred to the 3rd King's Own Hussars, stationed in The Punjab. He married in 1904 the elder daughter of the Earl of Dundonald. In 1908 he left the Army, joining the newly formed Territorial Force as a captain. The unit he joined was the Essex Battery of the Royal Horse Artillery, TF, in Chelmsford. He was commanding this Battery when war broke out. Thereafter, until his death in action on 31st March, 1918, during the German Operation Michael and related offensives, he continued to command the Battery.RCC7437 The War Diary of The Master of Bellhaven 1914 - 1918 (Hamilton)
