Lieutenant-Colonel W.C. Oates
Oates was an officer who served with the battalion whose history he wrote (2/8th Sherwood Foresters).
This battalion was part of the 178th (Sherwood Foresters) Brigade; they (both the battalion and the brigade) were a Territorial unit. Oates was for some time the only Regular officer in the Brigade, and was renowned for his abilities in training the men.
