Lieutenant-Commander John Winton

Winton joined the Royal Navy in 1949 and retired as a lieutenant-commander in 1963. He retired to North Wales. He was then a successful author of historical novels, one of his biggest fans having been Alistair Maclean. He then wrote biographies of Sir Walter Raleigh and Jellicoe, both of which received good reviews. This was before he wrote the book on Convoys, which we have in the Collection.
