Professor Stephen Ryan

Ryan was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and saw Army service in North Africa and Sicily in World War 2. After the war, he attended Yale , graduating with a BA in International Relations in 1947. Later he worked in the rubber industry in Indonesia and in the oil industry in Calcutta. Between 1956 and 1958 he attended Graduate School at Columbia University, where he gained his doctorate. He became Assistant Professor of History at the US Merchant Marine University from 1959 to 1962, then he was Associate Professor of History at New York State University at Oneonta, N.Y.
