General Sir Ian Hamilton

Hamilton was born in 1853 in Corfu, and died in London in 1947. He was Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in the unsuccessful campaign against Turkey (the Ottoman Empire) in the Gallipoli Peninsula during the war. He served with the 92nd Highlanders in the Second Afghan War, then he served in the First Boer War, The Relief of Khartoum,, Burma, Chitral, Tirah, and then the South African War, by which time he commanded first a Brigade and then a Division, finally becoming Kitchener's Chief of Staff. He was knighted in 1902, and then was an Observer with the Japanese Forces in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05. In 1910 he became British C-in-C Mediterranean. After he was recalled from Gallipoli in 1915 he was given no further command.
