Franz Werfel

Werfel was forced to leave Austria in 1938, following the Anschluss. He and his wife Alma settled in Marseilles but had to flee again during the German occupation of France. They spent five weeks sheltering in Lourdes, an experience which inspired Werfel's 1941 novel, "The Song of Bernadette". In 1940 the couple escaped Europe via The Pyrenees, Madrid and Portugal, and finally settled in Los Angeles. Werfel died there in 1945.
