Gunther E Rothenberg
Rothenberg was an internationally known military historian, best known for his publications on the Hapsburg military. He was born in 1923 in Berlin, and died aged 80 in Canberra, Australia. He was educated at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and went on to an MA at the University of Chicago. He had a military career preceding his university education. He served in the RASC (Eighth Army) between 1841 and 1946 with the rank of sergeant, winning the DCM. The unit he was with had volunteered for service whilst living in the USA as Jewish emigrees from Nazi Germany, and was in fact an all Jewish unit. He later served with the Hagannah for the 1948 Palestine War, there he rose to the rank of Captain in the IDF.
