General Andrei Evgenievich Snesarev
Snesarev was one of the Bolsheviks' best "regional scholars" as well as being a commander in the Red Army. He was given the job of preparing the Reds for either a British invasion of Afghanistan, which would be counter-attacked by the Bolsheviks, or for them to invade British India through Afghanistan.
Snesarev gave a series of lectures in 1919 and 1920 at the Oriental Department of the RKKA Military Academy, which were part of the preparation.
In the event, no such operations arose for the Bolsheviks, but the Snesarev lectures were converted into a book, which has been relevant ever since. The Soviet planners used it in the invasion of Afghanistan in 1979.
