In 1914, thousands of British civilians and merchant seamen, along with foreigners of other nationalities but with British connections, were interned at the hastily constructed POW camp at Ruhleben Racecourse at Spandau, Berlin. Most would not see freedom until the end of the war but in the meantime they created and maintained a unique way of life for the 4 years of their internment.
