This book was banned in 1918 by the U.S. Government. It had been published first in 1916 as a collection of La Motte's description of her life as a nurse. La Motte's original title was "The Backwash of War - The Human Wreckage of the Battlefield as Witnessed by an American Hospital Nurse". Allegedly it was this book which inspired the 2014 BBC TV series "The Crimson Field" about a Field Hospital in Northern France.
