This book is part of "The Greater War" series from Oxford University Press. Edited by Robert Gerwarth, it aims to present specific subjects in the context of the greater war, both in geographical and time frames. The book starts with the Balkan Wars, and moves through Russian participation in the war to the upheavals of the collapse of the Russian Empire which started in 1917. It treats the demise of the Empire as part of the Twentieth Century phenomenon of modern decolonisation.
