The Aisne was where the war of movement stopped, and the two sides dug in, to commence four years of largely trench warfare. The Germans occupied the high ground, and the various battles of this period cost the BEF 650 officers and 12,000 men killed - not excessive when compared to some battles later in the war, but at the time horrendously expensive for a small, professional army. This book is a detailed analysis of the battle.
