In this book, Hart questions the usual approach to the BEF's initial role in the war - the myth of unpreparedness, relying on the professionalism of the soldiers to bolster the conscripts of the French Army. Hart presents a much more complex and ultimately more powerful story than the normal description of this period of the war. An interesting book, with a somewhat more penetrative view of what actually happened. It is, of course, up to the reader to arrive at his/her own views.
