Clarke was a journalist who, by fair means and foul, managed to spend a large part of the war reporting from the Western Front. Later he covered the Irish War of Independence, although by then he had morphed into the UK's first Public Relations Officer. He pioneered the use of propaganda, and his story is certainly germane to the overall picture of the war, running into one of the "spin-off" conflicts which followed the end of the war.
