This book is in the category it is, as opposed to the Biography category, because of its chapters on the Great War - obviously with emphasis on what was happening on the Eastern Front - and then, particularly, the Russo-Polish War. It is written by a noted academic of the mid 20th Century, that is to say rather nearer in time to the events he was writing about than we are now.
