There is a Preface by Jacinto O Picon, of the Royal Spanish Academy. The book was translated by Bernard Miall. This is an unusual book, about a Spanish citizen detained in France by the Germans at the outset of the war, and held for 21 months until release. The story reveals much about the Germans' behaviour in especially the first weeks of the war, and it is accordingly as much a social commentary as a "ripping good yarn".
