Westmann gave up his medical studies at Freiburg University in 1914 to enlist. He was soon promoted to medical officer despite his youth and being unqualified. He was given command of an ambulance train on the Western Front.
These diaries - really more narratives related to the period of the war they were written in - are very useful, giving as they do the medical picture from the other side of the wire.
