In February 1918, Lady Northcliffe ran a campaign through her husband's newspapers, The Times and the Daily Mail, to collect enough pearls to make a necklace, intending to raffle this to raise money for the war effort.
This proved to be a huge success, nearly 4,000 pearls came in from all over the world - enough to create over 40 necklaces.
This book is the story of that remarkable venture.
