Fighter Writer. The Eventful Life of Sergeant Joe Lee, Scotland's Forgotten War Poet
As an artist, poet, Black Watch soldier and prisoner of war, Dundee born Joe Lee lived a more eventful life than most.
During the war, he fought with the Black Watch in the trenches, sending back poems and sketches that told vividly the realities of war.
His poems struck a chord with the people of Dundee, and indeed the whole country, being widely published locally but also in magazines such as The Spectator.
In 1915, an illustrated volume of his poems was published under the title "Ballads of Battle".
He appeared in anthologies alongside the likes of Sassoon, Graves, Owen, Brooke and others but today his name has largely been forgotten.
This well considered biography may help to close that gap.
