This book is not so much a narrative of this period in the world's history (and for this the author received some less than glowing reviews - which we consider was most unfair and told us more about the reviewers than about the author) as a "collective diary" of the era. It is, as the publishers state, all too human tales of exuberant dreams, dark fears, grubby ambitions and the absurdities of chance. The book brings immediacy to a moment of deep historical transformation - with consequences which echo down to today.
