The Royal Scots were Edinburgh based. They were the oldest regiment in the British Army, now being part of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. It was not a kilted regiment, and yet had one battalion - the 9th, also known as "the Dandy Ninth", which was kilted.
This battalion was formed just after the Boer War. It was a Territorial battalion and was mobilised in 1914 as part of the Lothian Brigade.
The battalion drew recruits from all walks of life but it did have strong representation from lawyers, rugby players and artists. A remarkably high proportion of the battalion received commissions and created a "diaspora" for the 9th.
The battalion served on the Western Front for much of the war, with over 6,000 men passing through, of whom 1,000 never returned.
