George F Kennan (American)
Kennan was a Pulitzer Prize winner. He was the author of some 15 books on the Soviet Union. He was Professor Emeritus at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.
He was best known as an advocate of a policy of containment of Soviet expansion in the Cold War. His writings inspired the policy known as "The Truman Doctrine".
He continued to analyse international affairs from the Institute until his death in 2005 at the age of 101.
