Derek Clayton

Clayton was born in Yorkshire and attended Batley Grammar School, then started a long association with the University of Birmingham. He graduated in 1979 with a BA in French and German and then taught Modern Languages in three different Birmingham schools before retiring in 2015. He had returned to the University in 2004 following publication of his battalion history of the 9th KOYLI and completed an MA in British First World War Studies. His book about the Battle of the Sambre was an extension of his Doctoral Thesis which was written under the supervision of Dr. John Bourne; his PhD was awarded in 2016. At that time he was planning a book on the history of the 16th Division in the war.
