Brigadier-General John Charteris CMG, DSO, MP

Charteris was Haig's Chief of Intelligence between 1915 and 1918. He had served with Haig, both in India and at Aldershot. He was slightly "off the wall" - he liked to start the day with a brandy and soda, he was brash, untidy, and something of the court jester in Haig's circle. Haig was forced to dismiss him in January 1918 after Charteris angered Lord Derby, then Secretary of State for War. He had no formal training in Intelligence.
