This is the authorised translation from the Swedish by H.G. de Walterstorff. It was edited and introduced by Bob Carruthers. This book was published in Swedish in 1914. It was then translated and published by John Lane of The Bodley Head Press, London in early 1915. Whilst a known germanophile, Hedin was a neutral, as well as an academic. The book therefore constitutes a useful part of the study of the German Army in the opening sequences of the war, with the expectation that it is as unbiased as possible.
