The book has a Foreword by Marshal Foch. This is an important book - first, because we have so few books about the Eastern Front - a state of affairs which we are continually seeking to improve - but also because this book is written by someone who throughout the war was a very senior officer. Whilst it appears that he was nowhere near the scenes of the battles described in the book - probably commanding a cavalry regiment but later progressing to DMO of the 9th Army and Chief of Staff of the 7th Army - he would have been very well aware of what actually happened. The book is written in a surprisingly accessible way. Despite its title, it is not really about the Russian Campaign of 1914, it is more a close study of Tannenberg; the battle itself (there is an interesting part about Samsonov's suicide) but also the actions both before and after the main battle.
