This is an extensive account of the immediate pre-war period, then the war years and finally the end of the old regime, by an academic who for some long period preceding the war spent three or four months in Russia each year, and during the war was posted by HMG to Petrograd to observe what was going on.
The researcher could not do better than to study this book as a primary source.
