Boyd joined a Territorial Artillery Unit in 1914, then moved on to the Regulars. He was commissioned in 1915 and was on the Western Front between 1916 and 1918, taking part in The Somme, Cambrai, Third Ypres and the 1918 Offensives.
The book is a competent description of what it was like to be a subaltern in the Artillery.
